Poltergeists was first published in 1979 and rapidly established itself as a leading work on the topic. It has been frequently referred to as groundbreaking and a classic of the genre. Illustrative cases from all over the world are presented, dating from the sixteenth century to the late twentieth. "After graduation Alan Gauld spent several years as a Research Fellow at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and then moved to the Department of Psychology at the University of Nottingham, where he became Reader in Psychology, teaching principally biological psychology and neuropsychology. He has maintained a keen interest in psychical research, writing or co-authoring several books in the genre including The Founders of Psychical Research (1968), ""Mediumship and Survival"" (1982), ""A History of Hypnotism"" (1992) and, with Ed and Emily Kelly et. al., ""Irreducible Mind"" (2007). He was on the Society for Psychical Research Council for over 50 years, and is a past president and a present vice-president of that Society. Tony Cornell was a native of Cambridge and lived there all his life (setting aside war-time service as a naval officer, and some adventurous overseas travels.) He was much involved in local affairs, but also of course with the SPR, of which he was a Council Member and for many years treasurer and a vice-president, and with the Cambridge University SPR, of which he was a long-serving president. He was the author of various articles on psychical research matters, and a frequent contributor to television and radio programmes dealing with the paranormal."
