Political Theatre

Overview

In the Summer of 1942, a young woman named Janet McMurphy got two unsettling pieces of news; that she was fired from her job as a paralegal, and that she was expecting a baby out of wedlock from a man who is overseas in the war. When she accepts a job at a posh show & movie theater, she doesn't realize that she's entered a possible refuge as well as an arena to battle the unfair realities of life. After plans with the biological father fall through, Janet makes a choice that could get her into trouble; to marry her immigrant co-worker Giuseppe who is in desperate need of a green card. By doing this, Janet hopes to provide a father for her child and to provide Giuseppe with America's protection from a death camp. Despite not really knowing each other, Janet and Giuseppe embrace the possibility of a life together. But to do this, they must convince to INS that they're in love, and that they've been secretly dating for months. It doesn't help that she's Irish-Catholic and he's Jewish, and are therefore a very unlikely couple Janet McMurphy and Giuseppe Petrov don't realize the chains of events their unexpected union will set in motion. Because sooner or later all of the people who live and work at the Golden Apple Theater, will have to do battle in and out of the courtrooms of New York City to obtain their own version of justice. They must also do battle with the prejudices of the day and the events of the era that threaten that to crush them. It is true that there is no business, like show business. But there's also no business like the one ruled by the pounding of a gavel. Two very different ways of life will be tested, as they discover that acting in a courtroom or on a stage have more in common than they realized.
