OverviewThis book provides us with a rare postcolonial examination of issues in Africa. The work includes essays on information technology, political culture and even discourse on gender issues, an area often ignored in several scholarships on Africa. The continent has experimented with a rich gamut of governance types - from traditional, consensual democracy, to colonial regimes; from post-independence political pluralism to military dictatorships and authoritarian regimes; from one-party to multi-party states; from Ujaama socialism, to Green Revolution; and, lately, from majoritarian to democracy to power-sharing. This has failed to create a sustained, robust governance culture and political system in the continent. Tolerance is usually contextually determined. Thus, while Western societies are socialized into being tolerant of 'deviant human behavior' such as same-sex marriages and homosexuality, and where ethnocentric discourse is protected by law, many African societies not only abhor such aberrant behaviors, but also see them as socially perverse. This value system, more than any other, has provoked robust and sustained controversy in the global community. The author observes that most of the tensions in society today have their roots in the conflicting claims and interpretations of what constitutes human freedom. While the West perceives freedom as a product of their history and culture, African societies see it as determined and regulated by community.
