Overview

Provides a detailed account of current police practice in the UK in the late 1990s, in response to sexual assault. The authors use case studies and interviews to find out why when the number of rape cases has almost trebled since 1985, the proportion of cases resulting in a conviction has dropped from 24 to 8.6 per cent. Chapters cover: an overview of existing research on domestic violence, rape and sexual assault; police culture and accusations of sexism, racism, homophobia and sexual harrassment within the police force; police recording practices and the role of the Crime Prosecution Service; male rape - including research carried out for a Channel 4 ""Dispatches"" programme; analysis of the four points in the judicial process at which cases may be dropped or excluded; interviews with complainants and first-hand accounts of their experiences of police practice; and proposals for reform. The authors place their findings within the context of theoretical debates about domestic and sexual violence and examine the gap between official condemnations of male violence, as enshrined in law, and the realities of the victims' (male and female) experiences - whereby the violence is too often condoned. The text should be valuable reading for those studying social policy, criminology, socio-legal studies or women's studies, and all those working with the victims of sexual assault.
