Policies and Politics in Western Europe: The Impact of the Recession

Overview

The problems of inflation, unemployment and economic stagnation are shared by all industrialised countries, but government response to them varies from state to state. This book, originally published in 1984, examines the effect of the recession of the 1980s on policy-making and policy content in Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Sweden. The author identifies the particular problems that face each country and explains why certain policies were adopted and how recession influenced policy-making. Through comparative analysis, the book shows how each government’s policy-making processes responded to the economic and social pressures created by a crisis in the world economy

Reviews

Author Information

Professor F.F. Ridley O.B.E was a European and Internationalist. He studied at the LSE, Paris and Berlin while lecturing around the world on Comparative Politics and Public Administration. His academic impact is reflected in-part by his prolific publishing output that continued during his 10 years as Professor Emeritus, by being the longest ever departmental head in a British University (30 years) and as the editor of Parliamentary Affairs for 29 years. His article on British Constitutional Law is still taught to law undergraduates up and down the country and discussed by legal academics. He had significant impact within his hometown Liverpool, which included being the Chair for the government’s regional response to help alleviate the massive regional unemployment. Overall, Fred loved teaching students at all stages, exemplified by his joy in being the chief examiner for British government at A-level.
