OverviewIn the member states of the European Union, few criminal phenomena can be observed whose scope and severity compares with that of domestic violence perpetrated by men against women. In no other social domain is the security of individuals less assured that in the domestic sphere. This book discusses modern standards and exemplary models of measures to combat male violence directed at women in their homes in the light of international experience. Emphasis was placed on determining the role of the police. On the one hand, law enforcement and judicial authorities cannot win the struggle against domestic violence single-handed, but have to rely on close co-operation with other authorities and non-governmental bodies and organizations; on the other hand, without state power as represented by law enforcement and judicial authorities, neither can women be adequately protected nor perpetrators properly prosecuted.
