Poi Dog's Purpose: A Book About Self-Discovery and Belonging

Overview

Kona, a lovable but uncertain dog, searches for her place in the world and makes many friends along the way. Kona's story reflects the importance of inclusion and the joy that comes from being a part of something greater. The concept of Ohana, the cherished Hawaiian idea of family and interconnectedness, is beautifully woven into the narrative, leaving children with a profound understanding of the bonds that tie us all together. This book is a must-read for families who wish to instill in their children the values of acceptance, diversity, and the true meaning of Ohana.

Reviews

Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2023I would recommend this book as a part of child's digital collection. From the sweet face of Kona on the cover to the illustrations of Kona's puppy friends, I could just flip through the pictures and be perfectly content. But there's so much more! I learned so many new facts about the diversity of dog breeds and their specialized purposes. The book also includes some extra features that will delight the reader like Hawaiian phrases, name etymology and a map showing dog breeds across the globe. There is a lot of learning in this book - but what I know captivated me the most was the message. I think most of us relate to how Kona is feeling at different points in our lives: when we feel like others have special skills or a clearly defined path but feel unsure about our skills and purpose. This beautifully illustrated and informative book reminds us that we all have things to continue by being ourselves.
