Overview

Poems to God (2025) focuses upon the idea that the presence and actions of God are more discernible, more available, than may often be thought, that the divine or sacred is not a realm that is experienced only in the Afterlife or just by spiritual devotees. In both the ordinary and extraordinary aspects of existence and experience, there are intimations or only thinly veiled encounters with the sacred or that which is holy (especially what Christians believe to be God). It is an invitation to religious and non-religious people, anyone concerned about purpose, meaning and significance of human life from conception to natural death, all in the context of God.

Alan Altany has BA & MA degrees in Catholic theology, and a Ph. D. in religious studies (University of Pittsburgh). After an academic career, he is a semi-retired professor of Comparative Religions at a small college in Florida, USA. In the past he has also been the founder & editor of a small magazine of poetry (The Beggar's Bowl), a high school teacher, factory and lawn maintenance worker, hotel clerk, director of professional faculty development in universities, novelist, truck driver, etc. He has self-published four books of poetry: A Beautiful Absurdity (2022), The Greatest Longing (2023), Intimations (2024), and Poems to God (2025).
