Mary Degen Heffelfinger's books are written for children who have survived the death of a parent.Unlike learning to walk or talk, learning to heal after the death of a loved one is not something we naturally know how to do. This vulnerable little mouse keeps going through life after his daddy dies, finding how many doors that seemed to have been closed can be opened once more through love and friendship, mending his broken heart through loving kindness, while he gives us the hope to move forward and love life once again. During the treacherous COVID-19 pandemic, and for any child, any time, losing a parent is overwhelmingly painful and lonely. How many of us lack the tools to be there to help? Mary gives many ideas for how to be of help, for it does take a village to heal.

Mary Degen Heffelfinger has been an art teacher in community colleges and adult extension classes throughout her life. After the untimely death of her husband, the father of her son, she continued to live and raise her family in Minneapolis, Minnesota.Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has provided more need for children's books on healing grief from the death of a parent. The Chrissy Mouse series was created as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chrissy Mouse books were based on Mary's experience of her husband's death in 1986. Mary sees this now as an opportunity to pass on some needed teachings on death and grieving and to help embrace all who have known the death of a loved one with compassion.Mary continues to teach watercolor painting to adults and has a three-level course of watercolor instruction on her website: www.monetmary.com
