Overview

(Percussion). Play-Off, composed in 2021 and commissioned by Drumming GP, is a 12-minute-long percussion quintet with four movements organised in pairs. Movements 1 and 3 are conceived as processions, whereas Movements 2 and 4 are fast toccatas for mallet-tuned instruments (vibraphone and marimba). The piece's title is an ironic reference to the term used for a series of games in sports competitions, typically at the end of a regular season, designed to determine that season's winner. Besides being present at various levels in the musical discourse throughout the piece, this association between musical performance and game-playing also adds a choreographic element to it.
