I am a great fan of using popular music for improving pupils' technique. Recently my Junior Concert Band's saxophone section played a set of chromatically moving quavers at a driving tempo constantly for 32 bars in an arrangement of Danny Elfman's Batman Theme. These players would not have had the same enthusiasm for the same passage had it been presented to them in a dry study book. If you meet pupils halfway with their taste in music, they often respond well, and Richard Harris's Play Hollywood book has some good examples of this approach. The first tune in the book (the theme from Star Wars) transcribes well for a grade 4-5 trumpet player with its challenging fanfare triplets in the main theme, and exacting entries on the anticipated first beat of the bar on a semiquaver. There isn't a trumpet player I know between the ages of 10 and 14 that doesn't want to play the James Bond theme, and the repeated semiquavers, originally played on guitar, are of great benefit to developing trumpeter's tonguing technique. Chariots of Fire provides long phrases which are good for the development of legato, and the crotchet triplets in the theme provide a useful exercise in rhythmic spacing. ... The CD, as well as providing a playalong accompaniment, also provides a written out piano accompaniment part in the form of a PDF file which can be downloaded onto your PC. Music Teacher, July 2009
