Overview

Play at Sight is a systematic course in the essential skills and techniques required for successful sight-reading, suitable for elementary pianists. Divided into four parts, each covering a specific range of skills, starting with separate hands within a compass of five notes, moving up to reading two staves together with varied keys, dynamics and articulation. One week's exercises are given on each page - the teacher can hear one or more at a weekly lesson. The technical point of each page is clearly explained. Specific problems such as keeping eyes on the music and reading two staves at once are discussed. The gradual pace encourages an accurate and musical performance at everystage, essential for confidence and enjoyment. Christine Brown is a renowned teacher and pedagogue of immense experience. She is highly respected for her lectures and articles on the subject of sight-reading and also a leading authority on the Hungarian composer, Bela Bartok.

Reviews

If you're on the Iookout for some new sightreading material for the young elementary-level pianist, look no further than this excellent volume by Christine Brown. The course is divided into four clearly defined parts, each covering a particular range of skills such as time patterns, extensions, keys, chords and so forth, allowing teacher and pupil to work at their own pace. Beginning with separate hands within a span of five notes, the book progresses to reading two staves of music, with the introduction of octave leaps, expression marks, changing clefs, slurs and staccato playing along the way The technical 'lesson' of each page is explained throughout, and exercises are provided on each page...... Brown is a pedagogue whose experience in this area clearly shows. Her excellent introduction alone is worth reading for its invaluable advice. International Piano Magazine, July/August 2008 With 264 tests in all, and with every page containing a week's supply (one per day), the student cannot avoid finally overcoming this reading hurdle which stunts so many of our pupils in their musical development. This book is so well laid out that students will become proficient sight readers with minimum effort and realization... Piano Professional Magazine, Spring 2008 This is an excellent book for any beginner pianist wanting to improve their sight-reading skills and for any teachers who would like to understand what is involved in good sight-reading. Christine Brown inspires confidence with her contention that all can improve if the necessary skills are developed and goes on to prove it. Music Teacher Magazine, February 2008
