While a Director of Stapeley Water Gardens, in Cheshire, England he designed gold medal gardens for various flower shows, including the Chelsea Flower Show. He was made a Fellow of the Institute of Horticulture in 1985. He is a regular contributor to garden magazines and has also written a number of books on the subject of rock and water gardening, including Waterlilies and other Aquatic Plants, The Water Garden and Pool and Waterside Plants.
