OverviewThe overall objective of Government policy on waste is to protect human health and the environment by producing less waste and by using it as a resource wherever possible. Through more sustainable waste management, moving the management of waste up the waste hierarchy - reduction, re-use, recycling and composting, use of waste as a source of energy, and only disposing as a last resort - the Government aims to break the link between economic growth and the environmental impact of waste. Planning has an important role, through the development of appropriate strategies for growth, regeneration and the prudent use of resources, and by providing sufficient opportunities for new waste management facilities. This statement covers key planning objectives, decision-making principles, regional spatial strategy, local development documents, the determining of planning applications (by both waste planning and other planning authorities), and monitoring and review.
