After 10 years in the Tasmanian parliament, he was elected to the Australian Senate in 1996, where he served for 16 years. He was leader of the Australian Greens from 2005 to 2012, when he retired as leader of the Greens and then retired from parliament. Bob Brown was the founder of Bush Heritage which today has 8.86 million hectares under conservation management and through the Bob Brown Foundation he continues to support campaigns to protect ecosystems, species and wild and scenic heritage.
