Planar Linkage Synthesis: A modern CAD based approach

Overview

Planar Linkage Synthesis presents a modern CAD based approach to the design of linkage mechanisms. The companion website www.prclinks.com contains step by step videos which demonstrate the principles in the book. Linkage design is a long-standing mechanical engineering problem. New developments in CAD modeling programs allow the creation of constraint based moveable geometry. This new tool opens the door to linkage design methods not previously possible. The design method presented is called Pole and Rotation angle Constraints (PRC). PRC is faster and easier than traditional planar linkage synthesis methods. It is the first design methodology capable of solving every type of planar linkage synthesis problem in any combination. It utilizes the most ubiquitous design tool (CAD). It is visual, intuitive, and simple to learn and use. It is an ideal method for the practicing engineer and student to learn and use in the design of linkage mechanisms. Author Information

The author, Ron Zimmerman discovered PRC in 2012. Since then, he has published four technical peer reviewed papers on the method through the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He has given invited lectures and taught seminars on the topic to university professors and students. PRC is already being taught in several universities. This book takes the PRC principles and presents them in a way suited to the undergraduate mechanical engineering student. It is intended to replace the existing content on linkage synthesis typically taught in a course on machine design. The companion website www.prclinks.com contains videos which illustrate the principles explained in the book. Ron has been employed by Magna Seating since 1996 and is responsible for the design of numerous automotive seating mechanisms and structures. He has been using PRC since its discovery. He has taught PRC principles throughout Magna Seating and it is now the only method used to design linkages there. Ron is a licensed professional engineer with 29 years of practical experience in the automotive industry. He holds a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from Brigham Young University and a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University. His graduate work focused on kinematics and mechanism design. He can be reached at prclinks@gmail.com and www.prclinks.com.
