Overview

""The most important writer of prose fiction in modern American letters . . . Her work, her life: deep truth, observed without pretension, with humor and humanity. As artist and person, an angel."" ―Tennessee Williams In these uncanny and insidious tales, Jane Bowles presents an incendiary and groundbreaking vision of the mad possibilities of literary modernism. From ""Everything Is Nice,"" where an American woman is led to a house in a ""blue Moslem town"" by a veiled woman with porcupines in her basket, to ""Camp Cataract,"" a tour de force of middle-class claustrophobia and dread set in Colorado, these stories are a bewildering, headlong plunge into the jagged, fever-dream world of Jane Bowles. And for the first time ever, this collection includes the excised sections of Bowles's novel Two Serious Ladies (which was originally Three Serious Ladies).

Author Information

Jane Auer Bowles has long had an underground reputation as one of the truly original writers of this century. Born in New York City in 1917, she lived in Tangier, Mexico, with her husband, Paul Bowles, from 1952 until her death in 1973. Though she only wrote one novella, one short play, and fewer than a dozen short stories over a roughly twenty-year span from the early 1940s to the mid-1960s, Jane Bowles has long been regarded by critics as one of the premier stylists of her generation. Bianca Bryan's versatile voice-over career spans national commercials for Gold Bond, Dick's, Allegra, and Virginia Lottery; on NPR as VPM's underwriting announcer; and as a recurring voice in World of Warcraft. Fluent in Spanish, her upbringing in countries like Argentina, Chile, El Salvador, Zimbabwe, and South Africa helps her tap into diverse dialects and cultures. She is also the seventh female PA announcer in baseball history for the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the double A team for the San Francisco Giants.
