OverviewExamining the nature of Third World development, its link with population movements and regional change, and the importance of 'place' within these processes, the perspectives of Place, Migration and Development in the Third World depart markedly from typical approaches and offer an alternative to conventional thinking. Although development has been the subject of academic study for more than three decades, established conceptualisations are often unsuitable for understanding the process at the local level. This book attempts to work from locales outwards rather than beginning by imposing generalisations upon them. This puts a high premium on knowledge of the area being studied but without this the study of development is hamstrung - place should be a touchstone against which academic findings ring true. Focusing on how population movements affect development and examining the role of place characteristics within this, this analysis emphasises how world economic and political conditions, donor nation actions, and the policies of the Third World governments themselves are articulated at the local level. This combination offers a unique blend of the theoretical and empirical, quantitative and qualitative, and spatial organization and areal differentiation schools of geography. There is something in this book for a great many geographers. -Patricia Gober, Geographical Analysis This is an interesting book, and this is no small praise. It is interesting for its methods, for the questions it raises, and not least for the partial answers it provides. -William Alonso, Journal of Regional Science . . . this interesting volume . . . puts forward perspectives which differ markedly from typical approaches and offers an alternative to conventional thinking . . . the book contains extensive literature reviews, and a variety of analytical approaches to studying the topics of concern.
- Checklist
I recommend Place, Migration and Development in the Third World both as a substantive contribution to the fields of migration, development, and Latin America and as a philosophical statement on the nature of geographic research.
