Piper Wayman is facing the most boring summer ever. Stuck in her artist dad's studio while he travels, her only excitement is complaining-until her long-lost grandmother Abby shows up. Abby isn't a cookie-baking grandma; she's a battle-hardened, retired sea captain with a duffel bag of mysteries and a weathered sailboat named Orcinus. Drafted as an unwilling first mate, Piper is thrust into a world of sextants, storm evasion, and a grumpy pelican named Mr. Flipflop. As Abby teaches her to navigate the unpredictable Gulf of Mexico, Piper realizes her grandmother is navigating a painful past, steering clear of the tiny island and the lighthouse where a childhood hurricane took everything. But the sea has its own plans, serving up flying fish, bioluminescent dolphin raves, and a pod of curious killer whales.

Timothy was born in 1964 to missionary parents and grew up exploring jungle rivers, coral reefs, and open-air markets all over Latin America-perfect training for a future deckhand storyteller. After college (TV & Theatre Production) and a thirty-year career directing documentaries and commercials, he went back to school at age 50 for an MFA in Fine Art Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design.Today Tim lives in Florida, where he has worked for many years as first mate for a sailboat delivery captain, moving sailboats up and down the Gulf and Eastern Seaboard. When he's not reefing sails or rescuing stray dogs, he's writing the Piper & Mr. Flipflop series-because every kid deserves a chart, a compass, and a one-flippered pelican for a sidekick. He shares dock space (and ice cream) with his wife, Andrea, their rescue pup Kodak, and the occasional visiting dolphin.
