Overview

This book examines the careers of two extraordinary political leaders-a Chinese and a Japanese-Liao Chengzhi (1908-1983) and Takasaki Tatsunosuke (1885-1964), who signed the Memorandum on Sino-Japanese Long-Term Comprehensive Trade in 1962. This accord-which is generally referred to as the LT Trade Agreement, an acronym of the co-signers-not only established semi-official economic relations between China and Japan, but also paved the way for their diplomatic normalization in 1972. The method of research is an in-depth analysis of primary sources, such as autobiographies and memoirs, and secondary sources, including scholarly and commercially-published books, as well as correspondence and interviews.
