He served on the faculty at the University of Miami (1969-1981) and University of Florida (1981-2007). He was also a Principal Investigator at the Mt. Desert Island Biological Laboratory from 1978-2010. His research interests center on the roles of the gills in fish osmoregulation. He is a Fellow of the AAAS and APS, has received both the August Krogh Distinguished Lectureship and the William Hoar Lectureship, and the University of Florida Teacher/Scholar of the Year Award.
