OverviewExcerpt from Pintoricchio: Umbrian School In 1492 he entered into an agreement to paint two evangelists and two Fathers Of the Church in the cathedral at Orvieto, the price settled upon being one hundred ducats. To carry out this commission, and at the same time attend to his work in Rome, necessitated much coming and going be tween the two places; but the decorations in Orvieto had not advanced very far before the painter fell into a violent quarrel with the ecclesiastics, who declared that he had not executed the first part of his work in accordance with his agreement. Their real Objection, however, seems to have been that Pintoricchio was using an alarming quantity of gold and ultramarine - far more than the chapter could afford.
