Pillage

Overview

This historical novel, inspired by true events, retraces the Franco-British expedition of 1860 to China and the pillage of Beijing's Summer Palace. After military victories at Dagu and Palikao, the allied armies discover the Summer Palace (Yuanmingyuan), an imperial residence containing millennia-old treasures. Faced with these riches, discipline collapses: for three days, soldiers systematically plunder porcelains, jades, and bronzes. The British then set fire to the palace. Shipped to France, the stolen objects are offered to Empress Eugénie, who creates the Chinese Museum at Fontainebleau. Victor Hugo publicly denounces this pillage, calling France and England ""bandits."" Chinese diplomat Pin Chun demands the return of the treasures, prophesying that China will never forget this humiliation. The novel explores the tormented consciences of its characters confronting the hypocritical transformation of pillage into ""cultural preservation.""
