Overview

This book is based on the diaries of some of the intrepid English gentry women who travelled around Wales between 1795 and 1860, initially by coach and carriage but latterly by train. A number of the diarists' fine watercolours, together with maps of their travels, enhance their lively writing.

The late eighteenth century saw the birth of tourism in Wales. It was the period of the Napoleonic conflict with France, with the result that the Grand Tour could not be undertaken on the continent by the upper classes. But both Scotland and Wales provided alternatives with their separate history, culture and, in Wales at least, language. Liz Pitmans admirable book focuses on some of the women travellers who ventured into various corners of Wales. Readers will not be familiar with the people she has chosen, for their journals have lain in the archives of various British libraries gathering dust. Liz Pitman is to be congratulated for her meticulous research in unearthing these documents and also for providing information about these obscure women. Quite apart from anything else they provide some insights into the social history of their period. But it was their comments on places in Wales which I found particularly interesting. My hometown, Denbigh, is described as very bad ... the castle is not worth looking at while the neighbouring town, Ruthin, is a sweet pretty place ... extremely clean. Llangollen is full of beggars. The book is enhanced by some beautiful colour illustrations by some of the tourists.
