Themes: coming of age first love girl power being different bullying friendship facing adversity revenge This easy-to-read book is ideal for middle-grade readers (9-12) and teens who are still developing their reading skills (12-16). 'You've got a face like a pig.' 'Yeah, I know.' Kylie's hazel eyes widen in surprise. She wasn't expecting the new girl to be calm and easy-going when faced with her bullying. 'So, you're a hog, ' she says. Patricia locks eyes with Kylie, holding her in a steady stare. 'No. You don't know anything, do you? If I were a pig, I'd be a female teenager, so that would make me a gilt.' 'You're female?' Kylie and her friends begin to snigger. Patricia shrugs her thickset shoulders. 'Ha, ha. You know, I'm used to people like you.' She points at the girls gathered in the bathroom. They are all pressed together like a swarm of trout in a net. 'Don't you think I get told I look like a pig a lot?' she says, touching her nose. 'My nose kinda looks like a snout, doesn't it?' One of the girls nods and Patricia lurches toward her with a snort. The girl screams, nearly falling over her friend as she steps back in alarm. Patricia laughs, showing her large, wide teeth. 'Who's next?' Table of ContentsReviewsrichard harland 5.0 out of 5 stars Not a Sleeping Beauty!Reviewed in Australia on 16 January 2025 Format: Paperback A story that gives us some way-out scientific fantasy - don't interrogate the details of the science! - but also a very real sense of high school life. I especially liked the presentation of Patricia's life as a half-pig hybrid - so convincing, how she survives at school with her thick skin and limited feelings. She's not a victim, though she's been appallingly used and exploited by her mad-scientist 'father'. Feelings come onto her life when another social outcast at school makes friends. But if Patricia isn't simply a victim, Chris isn't simply caring and sharing - he has his own selfishness too. For a moment, it looks as though the worst human impulses will win out, until Patricia makes a personal sacrifice. Even so, there's no easy resolution. As in all Jay Bird stories, the characters are far from perfect, and the happy endings are far from perfectly happy. ""Pig Girl"" is a romance, but Chris is no dashing prince and Patricia is no sleeping beauty rescued and redeemed. 5.0 out of 5 stars Mad Scientist Meets Teenage AngstReviewed in Australia on 27 November 2024 Format: KindleVerified Purchase Jay Bird has a rare ability to combine teenage themes with the rather bizarre in order to stimulate reluctant readers. This latest offering has a female protagonist who must go through life as part-pig, part-girl due to the experiements of a mad scientist. Whilst ""Pig Girl"" explores the themes of acceptance, bullying and teen romance, the main focus remains on the plot and how Patricia can overcome the misery of her hybrid status. Even the most reluctant reader will be drawn into the story and cheer for Patricia as she slowly finds solutions to her problems. Particularly suitable for teenage girls, Pig Girl is an excellent addition for reluctant and developing reader programs. Author InformationJay Bird writes middle-grade and young adult fiction.
