The editor of this book, Tara Steimer-Herbet (Ph. D.), is an archaeologist specializing in megalithic funerary and cultic monuments. She has worked in the Levant since 1992 and in the Arabian Peninsula since 1997. Her research has focused on two regions: southern Syria and the western Hadramawt region of Yemen. Desert and semi-desert areas have similar features but their settlement is quite different. Dr Steimer- Herbet convened this colloquium of colleagues performing similar studies in distant regions to collectively explore the background and cultural identity that the Levant and Arabia share.
