Phytochemistry of Odontonema Strictum Plant with Antihypertensive Activity

Overview

Called, rightly or wrongly, the silent killer, high blood pressure is a cardiovascular disease characterized by an elevation of blood pressure above normal levels. High blood pressure causes damage to vital organs such as the brain, kidneys, heart, etc., thereby reducing life expectancy. Odontonema strictum (Nees) Kuntze (Acanthaceae) is a plant traditionally used in the treatment of high blood pressure. The successes achieved by Brother Jean DESPORTE of the Collège de la Salle in Ouagadougou, cited by Sermé L. (3), who uses the leaves of Odontonema strictum in the treatment of high blood pressure, show that this is a plant worthy of interest. Bio-guided phytochemical research has identified the active ingredients contained in this plant, which are luteolin aglycone flavonoids with a content of 1.5%. Two flavonoids, odontin (molar mass: 550) and strictolin (molar mass: 756), have been isolated and identified by LC-MS.
