Physicochemical characterisation of leachates and soils

Overview

This study assesses the contamination generated by leachates from the Sidi Yahia uncontrolled landfill. Analyses show that young leachates are acidic (pH 5.2) and rich in organic matter (DBO₅ 390 mm Hg), while old ones show advanced mineralization with high conductivity (37 mS-cm-¹) and high ammonium concentrations (107 g-L-¹).The dam water is highly contaminated, unlike the well, which shows natural attenuation. Soils show significant physico-chemical changes depending on their exposure to leachates. The field survey revealed worrying socio-sanitary impacts on local populations and refuse collectors. Controlled waste management is needed to limit the transfer of pollutants.
