Yakov Afanasyev (alternative spelling: Iakov Afanassiev) teaches physics and physical oceanography at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 1986 and received his PhD (Candidate of Science) from the P. P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences in 1989. His research is focused on different aspects of geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD) including turbulent flows on the beta-plane. Yakov enjoys using laboratory experiments for his teaching demonstrations and research. Yakov lives in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada with his family. He is an avid painter and does portrait commissions. His landscapes, figurative and still life paintings can be found in many private collections.
