Overview

It's 1951. Phoebe Johnson is just getting used to her new school when Kenny Pierce throws up in class and sends her life into a tailspin. She can't stop thinking about Kenny but doesn't want to relive the incident by describing what she saw. Plus, she's embarrassed to admit how upset she was when her classmates and teacher didn't seem to be bothered at all. Just like a snowball rolling down a hill, Phoebe's problem gets bigger and bigger the longer she puts off dealing with it. She can't face going back to school and complains every morning about feeling sick. Her parents are baffled and frustrated. Her mom tells Miss Gardner, Phoebe's teacher, that she doesn't know how to get Phoebe back to school. There is no single solution, but with Miss Gardner's help and her parents' support, Phoebe is able to chip away at her snowball. Phoebe's love of animals is a key, and her special love for horses plays a significant role in her ability to make her huge snowball of a problem smaller.
