As a child who was born in the midst of the revolution in 1978, and who's parents migrated out of the country a few years later, I have always found the dichotomy of Iran during this period very interesting. While books such as Stephen Kinzer's All the Shah's Men provide a very good history at a macro level of Iran from the middle to late 20th century, Mehrdad Rafiee's book is of a more personal nature. The book provides a glimpse of life that Mr. Rafiee experienced in Iran during this often tumultuous period - be it in small country towns such as Kazerun, the westernised oil town of Abadan or the capital Tehran. The book is written as a series of letters to Mr. Rafiee's two sons, but it felt as if it was written for me as well as they gave me a window of what my parents (who are of a similar age) must have experienced during this time. I thoroughly recommend this book - especially to the second generation diaspora like myself who's parents migrated out of Iran.
