Permanence

Overview

Tattooing has moved in the past decade from the underground subculture it once was to a trendy fad at the turn of the century to now being a full-blown cultural phenomenon. ""Permanence"" brings together photographic portraits of people's tattoos and the stories behind them, told in the subjects' own words and handwriting. Kip Fulbeck, author of ""Part Asian"", and ""100 per cent Hapa"", has brought together an incredibly diverse group of tattoos, stories, and people - including a large handful of celebrities. From joyful to tragic, and impulsive to profound, ""Permanence"" presents the myriad voices, emotions, and faces that make up the stories of the tattooed population today.

Author Information

Kip Fulbeck is the author of Part Asian, 100% Hapa (Chronicle Books) and Paper Bullets: A Fictional Autobiography. He got picked on too many times as a kid, fell in love too many times as an adult, fronted a band that never went anywhere, and eventually became an award-winning artist and filmmaker. He passionately teaches, surfs, lifeguards, rides motorcycles, and loves to race guys half his age in the pool. A professor of art at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Kip is deeply respectful of the artistry and ritual of tattooing and proudly wears the works of Horitaka, Horitomo, and Horiyoshi III.
