Overview

Over fifty years have sped by since my late father researched and published his booklet on Perivale. The original copy is reproduced in its entirety, updated where necessary and enhanced with new and additional photographs, particularly of the Old Rectory. The Church Commissioners decided in March 1976 that St Mary-the-Virgin should become a redundant Church. The story of 'The Friend's of St. Mary's, Perivale' tells how the local community actively sought a future use for the ancient Church. It is now firmly established as one of the best small classical music and arts venues in West London with perfect acoustics, providing superb concerts performed by musicians of international reputation in a friendly setting. Admission, refreshments and parking are free, but donations are invited to pay musicians and maintain the Church.

Author Information

Eric Beavis became interested in Genealogy through an office colleague who taught him the basic principles to pass the time whilst on Fire Watch duty in the City of London during the Second World War. History being a favourite subject from his Cranleigh School days, the pastime continued to be a hobby for the remainder of his long life. After his daughter, Hilary, was born in May 1944, mother and daughter were evacuated to friends of Eric's in Cavendish, near Reading, Berkshire until 1945. By this time Eric had become experienced in researching parish records. The research into Perivale is therefore entwined into Hilary's early childhood and adolescence.
