OverviewThe research was undertaken to evaluate the performance of Kwanyako Water Treatment Plant of GWCL. This is because the existing plant performance cannot meet the acceptable guidelines values of GDWS and WHO. The main objectives of the research were to determine the quality of raw and final water parameters at the headworks and compare the results to GDWS and WHO guidelines values. The parameters analysed include pH, colour, turbidity, residual chlorine, total hardness, chloride and iron. The results obtained from the analysis indicated that most parameters fell within GDWS and WHO guideline values. This showed that the new treatment plant now treats raw water to meet acceptable standards with few exceptions where in December, 2009 and 2010, the residual chlorine and colour of final water were below the acceptable guideline values. This may be due to seasonal variations and changes in raw water characteristics as a result of activities along the River Ayensu. Recommendations are that most economic activities along the river source should be halted and the chlorinator should be adjusted to yield considerable level of residual chlorine in finished water.
