Author Information

Dr. Douglas R. Overmier is the President of ArrO Music in Atlanta GA, and a percussion clinician for Yamaha. Recently, he took a leave from serving as the Director of Instrumental Studies at the College of Central Florida. Previous positions include as Director of Bands at the University of West Georgia, and North Carolina State University. Dr. Overmier also taught five years in Ohio's public schools where he earned consistent superior ratings. His ensembles have appeared at the International Society of Music Educators biennial conferences in both the 2012 meeting in Greece, and 2008 in Bologna Italy. His ensembles have performed at national gatherings for the Music Educators National Conference, twelve state convention performances including Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, and West Virginia, in regional television commercials, pro sporting events, recordings, Made-for-TV movies, National Public Radio, and tours of Europe, Mexico, the Bahamas, and Antigua. As a performer, he has appeared with renowned artists including Winton Marcellus, Alan Jackson, David Friedman, Mary Wilson, Steve Houghton, Dizzy Gillespie, and David Samuels. His numerous performance credits include The North Carolina Symphony, Triangle Opera Company Orchestra, and the West Virginia Symphony. He is a published composer and arranger of over 300 band pieces, and more than 100 jazz, and percussion works. Many of these works can be heard on the Ozone Percussion CD La Bamba (Klavier Records), and I Said Jazz (Emerald Records). In addition, his music is featured in the CBS Television movie Never Give Up: The Jimmy V Story. His ensembles can be heard in the conference proceedings of state MENC conferences throughout the United States. Overmier has authored numerous articles in the Chronicle of Higher Education, and the Instrumentalist magazines. His most recent book, Pedagogical Approaches to Percussion Performance is expected out next summer. Overmier is in constant demand as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator throughout the United States, Caribbean and Central America with performance dates scheduled well into the year 2016. He is a member of the College Music Society, College Band Directors National Association, Percussive Arts Society, National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, Pi Kappa Lambda, Kappa Kappa Psi, Music Educators National Conference, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
