Overview

In some ways we are as knowledgeable of landmarks as we are of people. There are some landmarks that we know so well where we know them by their names and where they are located. Other landmarks that we often see we do not know much about them. There are others that we see so rarely that we know nothing about them. The underlying factor that affects and influences our evaluation of these urban edifices is the disparity in the way they are perceived among the various stakeholders such as designers and the laypublic. This book attempts to highlight the meaning of this disparity between the relevant groups with a view that with a better understanding of why some landmarks are perceived favourably by one group and not in kind by another will help in the creation of a better city.

Dr. Hasanuddin Lamit has a basic interest in architecture with a bachelor's degree in the area at the University of Western Australia, and later moving on to landscape as an area of self-interest by having done his Masters degree at Sheffield University. He later decided to complimentary enhanced his interest in the development and design of the built environment by pursuing his PhD in Urban Design at the same institution. Reflecting on his own experience, he is of the opinion that, regardless of the overlap of areas specialization, every academician will inevitably struggle with research direction and focus at some time. However, he has an inquisitive mind, well-informed, understands what is required in a realm of professional excellence be it in practicing industry or academic, and thinks these will have a solid basis from which to grow as a all round researcher and academician.
