OverviewPenicillin cream is a topical antibiotic used to treat certain skin conditions, such as minor wounds, skin infections, and cuts. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria that can cause infection and inflammation. Penicillin cream is usually applied to the affected area two to three times per day. Penicillin cream is a semi-synthetic antibiotic derived from Penicillium chrysogenum, a type of mold. It was developed in 1928 by British scientist Alexander Fleming, who noticed that the mold had antibacterial properties. Penicillin cream is most commonly used to treat minor skin infections caused by bacteria, such as impetigo, boils, folliculitis, and cellulitis. It may also be used to treat fungal infections, such as ringworm, athlete's foot, and jock itch.
