OverviewTravel writer Trevor Fishlock showcases the beautiful county of Pembrokeshire, in collaboration with landscape photographer Jeremy Moore. The words and images combine to celebrate the Pembrokeshire so beloved by all who live, work and visit there; the fisherman and the farmer, the soldier and the surfer, the tourist and the pilgrim. Table of ContentsReviewsTrevor Fishlock communicates with the keen eye of a reporter, the accuracy of an academic historian, and the inventiveness of a seasoned writer. Jeremy Moore is an accomplished photographer with a feeling for the essences of Wales born of long experience. They have combined their talents here to excellent effect and give us an account of Pembrokeshire that avoids clich and is frequently riveting. The photographs focus on details that are ancillary to the text, rounding it out in a way that is consistently pleasing. Many of the writer's beguiling word-pictures are left, magically, to speak for themselves a brave but ultimately wise policy. The high-quality production of the book makes it a joy to handle, and Fishlock's characteristically wry insights levitate it well above the coffee table. Text and photos conjure a complex tapestry in time and space, from the Neolithic to World War 2 and beyond, and Fishlock's tales span the centuries with dazzling fluency. They are stories of historical events and their surrounding myths, constantly fresh and with an innovative sleight of pen that makes the reader sit up and take notice. It is a good sign, to my mind, if a topographic book makes you reach for your maps and your walking boots. These delightful narratives appeal equally to travellers of the inveterate or of the armchair sort, and even the most seasoned Pembrokeshire connoisseur will find something new and spellbinding here.
