OverviewThe photographs in this book emerged from a visit to the Tamworth Country Music Festival on the Australia Day weekend in 1992 by photographer Spiros Coutroubas and writer Peter Wright. At the time they visited the Festival, they intended to turn their photographs and audio recordings into an article on the busking scene on Peel Street. The article never happened and the photographs and recordings were shelved until they were exhibited, 30 years later, at the 2022 Tamworth Country Music Festival. This book incorporates two series of images centred on Tamworth's main street - Peel Street - during the Festival. 'Working Peel Street' focuses on the buskers, hawkers and punters on Peel Street. This contrasts with the formal venues and awards ceremonies that are often presented as the face of the Festival. The other series - 'Messages from Peel Street' - people were asked to answer the question 'What do you think of the Country Music Festival?' with a few words on a card and to be photographed with their responses. Peel Street was and continues to be its own show. This book gives a sense of the place back in 1992.
