OverviewMetalanguage, understood as language that refers to another language, marks Pedro Almodóvar's narrative. The film All About My Mother presents three important practices that the metalinguistic function is capable of imprinting: anticipating fictional acts through the film within the film, triggering emotional functions by referencing artistic works, and describing characters by mentioning literary texts. An image analysis protocol was used as an analysis tool. The method numbered and qualified signs present in frames captured by decoupage, and the elements of the images were described through dissertational texts. It is argued that the Spanish director, by resorting to metalanguage, conducted and consolidated his film work.
