Overview

Trauma is the leading cause of death in children, and traumatic brain injury is the main determinant of morbidity and mortality. Despite these statistics, there are relatively few studies and a critical need for effective, pediatric specific neuroprotective interventions. Authored by internationally recognized basic scientists and clinician investigators, this special issue discusses the clinically important, rapidly evolving field of pediatric traumatic brain injury. It encompasses a wide range from clinical studies to research on the biochemical, cellular and molecular mechanisms of acute brain injury and secondary damage following traumatic brain injury. It is well documented that the developing brain is very different from the adult brain, and effective treatments must protect from acute and secondary damage and allow for appropriate brain growth and development during the recovery phase.
