OverviewThe events described in Bible stories can be best understood if an accurate chronology of these events is available. Many of the fundamental and longstanding mysteries in biblical studies also concern chronology. An emphasis in this book is on the chronological usefulness of what are referred to here as patterns. Some of these patterns may be periodic, such as the sabbatical year, jubilee year, and census calendars. Natural patterns based on astronomy can be calculated precisely for any time of biblical interest. Geophysical events such as volcanic eruptions may provide precisely datable correlations over wide geographical areas, and archaeological discoveries also provide valuable chronological information. These and other patterns taken together help to confirm the historicity of many ancient Bible-related stories, while providing them with probable dates of unprecedented accuracy. Table of ContentsReviewsIn Vetus Testamentum [Vol. 65 (2015) 659-660], Nathan MacDonald of Cambridge, has reviewed Patterns of Biblical Chronology. He says In this volume the biblical chronology is uncovered for the period from Solomon to the life of Abraham with particular attention to Moses' life. The cycle of jubilees is mapped back to the time of the exodus and an important assertion of the book is that key events such as the completion of the temple or its repair by Joash, Hezekiah, and Josiah fall at the same time as a jubilee. The author, a physics professor, is well place to carry out such an investigation which requires a certain level of mathematical ingenuity and a mind unclouded by historical criticism. Not only the Bible, but all ancient sources are treated with considerable generosity. And not just ancient sources --even SeferHaYasher apparently provides useful historical data about ancient Israel. Amongst the revolutionary discoveries are that Amenhotep II was the Pharaoh of the exodus, the exodus began on the 16 April 1440 BCE, and the eruption of Thera in 1628 BCE caused the famine in Joseph's day. The book of Jubilees has found its modern day heir. "In Vetus Testamentum [Vol. 65 (2015) 659-660], Nathan MacDonald of Cambridge, has reviewed Patterns of Biblical Chronology.
