Reviews

Pathways to Resiliency: Black and Latino Families in America is an impressive collection of readings. The book clearly demonstrates the family is not a monolithic entity. Rather, the book presents the family as a complex institution influenced by political, historical, cultural, and economic forces. With a variety of theoretical perspectives and empirical studies, the book takes an in-depth look at challenges and constraints faced by families in a time of deepening inequalities. This book investigates critical terrain such as education, religion, mass media, interpersonal relationships, health care, neighborhood violence, and more. In the face of significant challenges, we see how Black and Latino families effectively draw on various resources and continue to show resiliency and optimism. -Dr. Todd Schoepflin, Associate Professor of sociology, Niagara University
