Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled PARTNERING - ENHANCES PROJECT PERFORMANCE submitted by LEE Fook Pui, Billy for the degree of Master of Science in Construction Project Management at The University of Hong Kong in June 2001. ABSTRACT Partnering is increasingly being used on construction projects. Partnering involves the parties to a construction project working together in an environment of trust and openness to realize the project efficiently without or less conflict. A postal and distribution questionnaire survey, the opinions of different type of construction professional and technical staffs - consultants and clients and contractors and its supply chains were assessed in relation to the critical success factors of nature of partnering for the partnered and nonpartnered projects. The study shows that contractors and clients are more positive about partnering nature to enhance project performance in label of partnered project but there is no significant difference about partnering nature to enhance project performance in nonpartnered project. The research also indicates that certain requirements must be met of partnering is to succeed. In particular, the behavioural success factors like communication, trust, integrity, honesty, competence, commitment, trustworthiness, less time growth, less cost growth and quality of works, a clear understanding of roles, consistency and flexible attitude are necessary. It is recognized that nothing will change without considerable effort from all parties in behavioural-based. Respondents believe that all partnering process with or without labelled partnering can bring significant benefits, including fewer adversarial relationship and increased client satisfaction to enhance the project performance and project success, to the construction industry if all construction participants involved in a project strive for its success.
