Among his publications are Politics and the Soviet System (1989); The Truth of Authority: Ideology and Communication in the Soviet Union (1988); Building Socialism in Bolshevik Russia: Ideology and Industrial Organization, 1917–1921 (1984); and, with Frederick C. Barghoorn, Politics in the USSR (1986). He has published numerous books and articles dealing with Soviet and post-Soviet politics.
