Reviews

Derek Tate is one of the most knowledgeable people I have come across on the subject of skiing. His approach is at once technically perfect but easily communicated - a rare combination ofattributes, but one that is gracefully packaged in this volume. The holistic approach to the art of skiing that Derek brings together in this book will also greatly benefit your life off-piste and the contributions from experts such as David Murrie,(basic principles of skiing); Liam Williams (training) and Robbie Fenlon (off-piste) add a degree of authority rarely found in any one single opus. Derek's wife Shona Tate, herself a BASI instructor, brings an additional perspective to the excellent instruction in this handbook that will serve from intermediate recreational standard to instructor level. A thoroughly well thought out work that will be referred to by many improving skiers for years to come. Damian HackettManaging Director, Outsider Media Group What a pleasure to read a book that is technically excellent and informative, yet is easy to understand from start to finish. From early intermediate skier to aspiring instructors at all levels, this book will be read again and again and cannot help but improve both your technical understanding and on-snow skiing. 9 Jun 2008 Chris Ackner

Author Information

Principal Author - Derek Tate Derek is the current Head of Training for IASI. Originally from Dublin, Derek has been teaching skiing full time for over 20 years. He has been instrumental in developing the training and grading system for IASI. He also works as a trainer for the British Association of Snowsport Instructors(BASI). He now lives in Chamonix where he runs his ski school together with his wife Shona. Derek's career started on the artificial ski slope at Kilternan, Dublin where the Ski Club of Ireland is based. Having done his first BASI course in January 1986 in Flaine, France, he then taught his first three seasons in the Cairngorm Mountains of Scotland working for Carrbridge Ski School. Since then Derek has worked in many parts of the world from New Hampshire, USA to Chatel in the Portes du Soleil, and Courchevel in three valleys of France to name but a few. Derek is also a graduate of the Diploma in Professional Studies Sports Coaching, from Moray House/Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. And he represented Ireland as a technical delegate at the 1999 Interski Congress in Norway. Writing this book has been a natural development of Derek's career following the writing of educational resources for BASI, Snowsport Scotland and IASI.
