This is the vivid testimony of an American journalist shot down over Berlin. After he was captured in Berlin, he was taken on a tour of Germany and shown what the civilian population was being subjected to. Bennett spent the rest of the war in Stalag Luft I, where he started the newspaper POW WOW, secretly read by 9,000 prisoners. Bennett's experiences led him to condemn the Allied policy of systematically bombing civilian population centers.

Lowell Bennett was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1920. He embarked early on a life of adventure that took him all over the world, before meeting his Scottish wife-to-be in London in 1940 and becoming a war correspondent for the American International News Service. His first war assignment was covering the Allied invasion of Tunisia in October 1942, a story he tells in his first book Assignment to Nowhere, published by the Vanguard Press in 1943. Alan Bennett is a renowned playwright, essayist, screenwriter, and author who has won dozens of awards in his more than fifty-year career, including awards for lifetime achievement. His bestselling titles include The Uncommon Reader, Untold Stories, Writing Home, and others. David de Vries can be seen in a number of feature films, including The Founder, The Accountant, Captain America: Civil War, and Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. As a veteran stage actor, David appeared as Lumiere in Disney's Beauty and the Beast on Broadway, as Dr. Dillamond in the Los Angeles and Chicago companies of Wicked, and in hundreds of shows in regional theaters throughout the country. He is an Audie and Odyssey Award-winning narrator for his performance in Pam Munoz Ryan's Echo and has voiced over 100 titles in every genre, including his Audie Award-nominated performance of the 2011 Caldecott winner A Sick Day for Amos McGee.
