"The ""Jesus Speaks Today series strives to show how the Word continues to be relevant to our contemporary world, while still respecting its original context. ""Parables of Jesus follows the same approach as other books in the Jesus Speaks Today series. Each chapter reflects on a selected scripture passage, considering what it would have meant for the people who first heard it. This original understanding to the entire gospel setting and the social context of the Roman Empire. John McLaughlin then discusses how we might apply the parable today. Professor McLaughlin emphasizes a number of points regarding the Gospel parables. They were addressed to the general population and were meant to be easily understood without detailed explanation. Most parables contain a ""twist,"" a surprising element--""something in parables is outside normal experience. Finally, parables are a part of God's Word and are meant as much for us as for those who first heard them."
