This book considers the most important theoretical concepts relating to palaeobiogeography together with descriptions of the most useful analytical methods. General biogeographical concepts and the factors influencing distributional patterns are discussed and illustrated by selected case histories. The palaeobiogeography of fossil organisms is used to generate hypotheses on continental drifting, past migration routes, palaeobiodiversity gradients, geographic barriers, palaeoclimatic and palaeoceanographic conditions. The biographical dimension of biodiversity is explored by analyzing the existing latitudinal and longitudinal gradients of biodiversity, and the biodiversity/area relationship is discussed with particular reference to sea-level variations.
