OverviewAn art-historical and technical study of the 31 painted panels preserved. Painted alter frontals from the Middle Ages are rare. In Norway 31 wooden panels, from the period 1250-1350 are preserved. These are executed in a characteristically English-influenced contemporary stylistic language, in an oil technique created within a European workshop tradition. This 3-volume book is an exhaustive survey, covering both art-history and technology. The first volume is the co-operative work of three authors: E.B.Hohler, N.J.Morgan and A. Wichstrom, presenting the history, style and iconography of the paintings. The second, written by U. Plahter, with a contribution by R. White, presents the carpentry and the painting techniques, with analyses of the materials, their composition, and their origin. The thorough studies of these paintings in Norway have established new facts about European medieval oil painting in general, and are presented here for the first time in their complete context. The third volume contains the illustrations. Full Product DetailsAuthor: Unn Plahter , E.Morgan N. Hohler , A.
